Vee-Jay Records was founded in Gary, Indiana in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken (Mr. and Mrs. Bracken), who used their first initials for the label's name. The first song they ever recorded made it in to the top ten of the national rhythm & blues charts. In a short time, Vee-Jay was the most successful black-owned record company in the U.S.A.; by 1963, they were charting records at a faster rate than some of the major labels. They were the first U.S. company to have the Beatles; in one month alone in early 1964, they sold 2.6 million Beatles singles. Two years later, the company was bankrupt. The trouble with these facts is they don't tell the story...
This beautiful, long out of print, Collector's Edition 3-CD Box Set celebrates 40 years of classic hits with 75 Vee-Jay titles and rare cuts from 1953 to 1993. This package also includes a 24 page book documenting The Vee-Jay Story (complete with producer's notes and a collection of Vee-Jay album covers) and a red 7-inch 45 rpm of Vee-Jay s first R&B hit, The Spaniels ''Goodnite Sweetheart, Goodnite''.

In 1965, musician, author, historian and producer Samuel Charters enlisted nine of the Midwest’s best blues artists to record a short set each for a Vanguard Records sampler, showcasing the electric sound of Chicago Blues. The distinct style, known for its use of electric guitars, amplified harmonicas, a rhythm section and often a piano, was exemplified by artists like Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, Jonny Young, Otis Spann and Big Walter Horton—all of whom appear on the compilation.
Released in 1966, the groundbreaking Chicago/The Blues/Today! trilogy introduced countless listeners to the blues—helping to popularize the genre in the US, the UK and beyond. These recordings also influenced a host of up-and-coming rock artists, including The Animals, Eric Clapton and The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and, later, The Allman Brothers Band. As AllMusic notes, “It’s fair to assume that most blues-influenced artists had all three volumes in their respective collections, and the songs on them ended up in the repertoires of everyone from Jimi Hendrix…to Led Zeppelin…to Steppenwolf.”
